First Aid in remote and wilderness environments

A practical, hands on course suitable for anyone undertaking outdoor adventurous activities and journeys in remote environments. Ideal for outdoor enthusiasts & bushcraft / survival situations in the UK and temperate climates.

This course can be taken as a 1-day (8hr) outdoor first aid course or 2-day (16hr) outdoor first aid course

Syllabus – Day 1:

  • Assessing vital signs
    Brain activity, breathing & circulation
  • Approaching and assessing a casualty
    The ABC of first aid
  • Treating immediately life threatening conditions
    Heart attack, bleeding, shock, burns, scalds & choking
  • Basic Life Support
    CPR in confined spaces, drowning & use of face masks
  • Treating common illnesses:
    Asthma, epilepsy, anaphylaxis, diabetes & angina
  • Taking action to prevent further deterioration:
    Ensuring a safe airway, stabilising, bandaging & immobilising
  • Hot & cold problems:
    Recognising & treating hypothermia & heat exhaustion
  • Scenarios in the outdoor environment
    e.g. walking, bushcraft & paddlesports

Syllabus – Day 2:

  • Common outdoor injuries
    Breaks, strains & sprains
  • Dealing with major trauma injuries
    Head, neck, spine & chest
  • Scenarios in the semi-remote environment
    e.g. mountain biking & climbing
  • Recognising and preventing injuries from heat and cold
    Burns, scalds & hypothermia
  • Providing extended casualty care in the field
    Low-tech equipment, moving, monitoring & evacuation
  • Appropriate emergency kit for outdoor instructors & centres
  • Record keeping & accident reporting
  • Managing an incident
    Multiple casualties & basic triage
  • Scenarios in remote temperate environments
    Forests Mountains, caves, rivers & sea

The course includes practical workshops and outdoor-based scenarios. All courses are certificated and provided by our sister company Lakes First Aid. Certificates are valid for 3 years.
